Kristen Dorsey Designs, LLC was founded in 2011 by Kristen Dorsey, an award-winning Chickasaw metalsmith living and working in Huntington Beach, CA. For Kristen, jewelry goes beyond ornamental adornment; it is a medium with which she has forged her cultural identity as a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, a Native American tribe originally from the southeast.  Utilizing natural gemstones, precious metals, and other materials, her handcrafted jewelry pieces are a unique mix of Chickasaw visual traditions infused with inspiration drawn from the beauty of the California Coast.  Dorsey’s philosophy is that “jewelry is a sacred narrative; it captures moments of significance for the wearer such as transitions in life, relationships with one another, and with one’s community, cultural identity, and spirituality.”

Meeting KDD babe, Jessica Crawford

Kristen Dorsey

We are excited to introduce our second KDD babe, Jessica Crawford! 47 year-old Jessica Fleming Crawford is the Southeast Regional Director for The Archaeological Conservancy, a non-profit preservation organization.

What are your hobbies and favorite places to travel?

Most of my hobbies involve my job in one way or another. I love archaeology, history and travel. Really, I'll get in the car and go anywhere-doesn't have to be an exotic locale. I can find something I like about any place. I get to travel a lot for work, and I love visiting antique shops, flea markets and museums when I travel. I'm also an historic cemetery buff.

What is your favorite piece and why?

My Loksi Four Directions Earrings in rose gold because they go with anything and are the perfect size-not too big but definitely big enough to be noticed. I also really love my rose gold Woodpecker Bracelet (No longer available). I like my jewelry to have meaning and all of Kristen's pieces are not just beautiful, every aspect of every piece has some significance and meaning.

How do you feel when you wear KDD?

It may sound funny, but I always feel cool. Kristen's pieces are very sophisticated and unique. NO ONE makes anything like them. I like when people ask me about them and I'm able to explain who made them and what aspects of Native American culture, especially Southeastern Native American culture, they represent.

What is an accomplishment that you are most proud of?

I'm so fortunate that I'm able to do for a living, something I'm so passionate about. I believe with all my heart in the importance of preserving places and structures, whether it's archaeological, architectural, historic or prehistoric. I've been able to do that in my position with The Conservancy. It's such an honor to be able to do that and to work with and meet people who feel the same. Sometimes, In just amazed that I'm able to set foot on such sacred places!
