Now that it is 2013 we have a chance to reflect upon the many exciting events that happened to Kristen Dorsey Designs in 2012. Dorsey's unique jewelry has garnered attention from fashion designers, stylists, celebrities and bloggers who not only appreciate her bold yet feminine aesthetic, but also love how each piece is subtly infused with the history and culture of Dorsey's tribal nation. 2012 saw many milestones for KDD. The links below feature some of these highlights.
Blood Quantum Earrings for the Beyond Buckskin Feature Week - In the summer of 2012 Kristen Dorsey Designs was added to the hot new online boutique Beyond Buckskin. Beyond Buckskin features clothing and accessories of Native American designers from around the country in a well edited, ever changing collection. Beyond Buckskin is also a blog that discusses issues of cultural appropriation in the fashion industry as well as highlighting the achievements of Native American fashion designers. Dr. Jessica Metcalfe, the founder and mastermind behind Beyond Buckskin reached out to Dorsey to design earrings based on her necklace titled "Are you on the Dawes Rolls." These earrings were designed to question the reasoning behind the controversial blood quantum system, a concept that every Native person must navigate. The earrings made quite a splash and were featured in blogs, Tumbler pages, and Facebook discussions, and even in Indian Country Today. They are still one of Dorsey's best sellers on the beyond Buckskin Boutique. http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/mobile/article/what-percentage...
Bethany Yellowtail Fashion Shows: Sutra, Costa Mesa and Los Angeles Fashion Week - Kristen Dorsey Designs had the honor and privilege to collaborate with fashion designer Bethany Yellowtail on several exciting fashion events. The first show took place at the night club, Sutra in Orange County and the second took place as apart of the LA Fashion week event Haus of Allure. Each show featured B. Yellowtail dresses paired with Dorsey's Sky Serpent collection and one of a kind statement pieces.
SEASAM South Eastern Art Show and Market - Attending tribal events in Oklahoma always feels like going home for Dorsey. While California is where she was born and raised, Chickasaw country is a home away from home. The SEASAM events are a time for re-connecting with friends, catching up with fellow artists work, meeting new relatives, and of course seeing lots of repeat customers. Dorsey took home several awards including a first place in jewelry.
